In Tanzania, volunteers are greatly needed and incredibly appreciated. Classrooms are full beyond their maximum capacities with children, hospitals are short staffed and the AIDS virus is infecting more and more people. We are perhaps the only safari company that also offers a volunteer home-stay component. This experience includes all the adventure you would expect from Tanzania, coupled with life changing encounters with local people at your housing site and volunteer placement. Your weekends are free to explore the country, go on short safaris, attend local village activities, hike to waterfalls, fly to Zanzibar and spend time in the traditional areas of Maasailand.

With this journey, you will experience the heart and soul of Tanzania. As a volunteer, you will also witness first-hand, the incredibly positive work that Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are implementing on the ground to make Tanzania and the world a better place. After this stay in Tanzania, you will return home with a greater understanding of Tanzania, its people, and its future.

The original reason the co-owner of Maasailand Explorer came to Tanzania was to volunteer. Therefore, our company is committed to sustaining volunteerism in Tanzania and specifically the Arusha and Maasai regions. There is a never-ending possibility to lend a helping hand or to assist in making the daily life of those in need a little easier. This is a very personal journey that will allow you to see our world through very different eyes in an inspiring and life changing way.

As a volunteer you will be asked to stay for a minimum of one month. Your housing will be approximately 2 miles from the center of Arusha Town in the village of Sanawari, which is inhabited by mainly Maasai people. Here you will share a room with other volunteers, enjoy traditional foods and experience the best of Tanzanian life.

Arusha has many interesting sights to offer guests. The Rwandan Genocide Tribunal is located downtown, as well as local markets, movie theaters, restaurants, cafes, Internet opportunities etc.

Depending on your skills and desires, you will be placed in any of the following program sites:

• Primary School
• Secondary School
• AIDS Orphanage
• Government Hospital
• Agricultural Farm

You will live in our home, which is situated in the middle of a small Maasai family compound that was created over 50 years ago, in order for Maasai from the countryside to be allowed the opportunity to attend school in town. There are always local people to talk to, children to play with and friendships to be made.

We accept 3-6 volunteers per month. The program fee includes:

• Transport to and from the airport
• Cultural Orientation and Briefing
• Transport to and from your program site each day
• 3 meals a day + purified water
• Lodging
• A long weekend to the National Parks
• A long weekend in Maasailand
• 2 KiSwahili classes per week
• An unforgettable journey

Volunteers work Monday through Friday in their designated placements. Two weekends are free for you to explore on your own, while the other two weekends are filled with organized safaris and stays with the Maasai people.
